Staking was introduced to Tezos in June 2024, but you haven't staked your tez (XTZ) yet. As a result, you're missing out on significant rewards — and leaving tez on the table.
The Paris protocol upgrade
The June 2024 Paris upgrade introduced individual staking for the first time, as part of a set of changes that modified Tezos’ proof-of-stake mechanism for greater network security. As a result, individuals can now stake their tez with bakers (validators) and earn greater rewards.

Pre-Paris upgrade
Prior to June 2024
+
Tez holders could only earn rewards through delegation.
+
Delegation means assigning tez to a baker (validator), who runs a node to help keep the Tezos network running and secure.
+
Delegated tez remains liquid, and delegation rewards are allocated by bakers.
Post-Paris upgrade
From June 2024
Staking was launched on Tezos, introducing a new way to earn rewards.
With staking, individuals lock their tez as part of a baker’s stake, which is a requirement for validators to participate in proof-of-stake networks.
By joining bakers in putting your tez at stake, you earn triple the rewards of delegation, and which accrue automatically.
How to stake
Custodial
If your tez is with a custodian
If your tez is with a custodian, talk to them. Many custodians offer staking services directly or can guide you on how to stake your tez with the baker of your choice.
Custodians that support staking on Tezos:
Non-custodial
If you manage your tez yourself
If you manage your tez yourself, you can easily stake via the Temple, AirGap and Umami wallets, or by following the instructions below.
Head over to stake.tezos.com and connect your preferred Tezos wallet
If you have yet to delegate, first delegate with a baker and then stake with them. If you already delegate to a baker, you can immediately choose to stake
Once you click “Stake”, your staking rewards will begin to accrue automatically in your wallet address, compounding per 2.8 days (the duration of a “cycle” on Tezos)
Staking takes effect immediately, as does unstaking.
